Shiveluch is in one of its most sustained eruptive spells in years. Through July 2026 it has produced near-daily explosions, each sending ash high enough to threaten aircraft and prompt a Tokyo VAAC advisory. Reported plume heights, in order:

The Volcano Most People Have Never Heard Of

Ask someone to name the world's most active volcano and you'll hear Kīlauea, or Etna, or Stromboli. Shiveluch almost never comes up — and that says more about geography than geology. It sits in one of the emptiest corners of Russia, on the northern end of the Kamchatka Peninsula, where an eruption blankets tundra and reindeer pasture instead of towns. So it erupts, and erupts, and stays off the front pages.

The name comes from the Itelmen word often translated as "smoking mountain," and it earns it. NASA's Earth Observatory counts roughly 60 substantial eruptions in the last 10,000 years, and satellites pick up thermal anomalies, hot avalanches, and fresh ash on a near-daily basis. It is a stratovolcano of andesite and basaltic andesite, the sticky, gas-rich magma that makes volcanoes explosive rather than gentle.

Why We Call It the Most Explosive Volcano on Record

Here is a claim you won't find on the news wires, because it comes straight out of our eruption database rather than a press release. We counted every eruption in our 11,079-record Smithsonian GVP dataset by its maximum Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), and asked a simple question: which volcano has the most large explosive eruptions on record?

The answer is Shiveluch, and it isn't close. It has 43 eruptions rated VEI 4 or higher — the class that includes 1980 Mount St. Helens — more than double the next volcano on the list. Seventeen of those reached VEI 5. No other volcano in the database comes near that combination of frequency and size.

This measures the documented eruptive record, not total erupted volume. A single supervolcano blast like Toba dwarfs anything Shiveluch has done. But for sheer relentlessness — big eruption after big eruption, century after century — nothing else in the record keeps up.

Old Shiveluch, Young Shiveluch, and the Collapsing Dome

Shiveluch is really two volcanoes stacked in time. The ancient Old Shiveluch edifice — 60,000 to 70,000 years old — is truncated by a broad, roughly 9-km-wide caldera that formed when the summit catastrophically collapsed toward the south about 10,000 years ago. Inside that scar sits Young Shiveluch, the active cone, its growing lava dome poking up to around 2,800 m.

That dome is the engine of nearly everything Shiveluch does. Thick andesite magma squeezes up and piles into a steep dome that grows until it can't support itself. When a chunk gives way, the sudden unloading lets trapped gas flash to the surface, driving explosions and sending pyroclastic flows — avalanches of hot gas, ash, and rock — racing down the flanks at highway speeds. Then the dome starts rebuilding, and the cycle resets. It is the same fundamentally unstable mechanism that made Mount Pelée so deadly in 1902 — Shiveluch just runs it on repeat in a place with almost no one to kill.

The Big Ones: 1854, 1964, and 2023

Our records list a VEI 5 eruption in 1854, Shiveluch's most explosive in historical time. But the eruption geologists still study is November 12, 1964: a VEI 4 blast that blew apart the summit dome complex and left the amphitheater that Young Shiveluch now grows inside. It sheared off part of the mountain as one of the largest volcanic debris avalanches ever recorded — and it happened in a place so remote that most people alive at the time never heard of it.

On April 11, 2023, Shiveluch produced its heaviest ashfall in 60 years. Up to 8.5 cm (3.5 in) of ash buried the town of Klyuchi and nearby villages, the ash column punched above 50,000 ft, and the cloud spread more than 500 km. KVERT raised the aviation color code to red and the collapse rebuilt the Young Shiveluch dome — the same dome now feeding the 2026 sequence.

The Real Danger Is in the Sky

Kamchatka sits directly beneath some of the busiest trans-Pacific flight corridors on Earth. Volcanic ash is invisible on radar and can flame out a jet engine, so every Shiveluch plume that reaches cruising altitude forces the Tokyo VAAC to issue advisories and airlines to reroute. That, far more than any threat to the ground, is why a volcano in the middle of nowhere shows up in the news.

When you see a headline about Shiveluch "threatening aviation," this is what it means. The 2010 Eyjafjallajökull crisis in Iceland — which grounded European air travel for days — taught the industry exactly how much a modest ash cloud in the wrong place can cost. Volcanic ash is the reason a Kamchatkan dome collapse becomes a global logistics problem.
