Mount Tambora 1815: The Largest Eruption in Recorded History

On 10 April 1815, Mount Tambora produced the most powerful eruption humans have ever documented — a VEI 7 that blew roughly 1,400 m off the mountain, was heard 2,600 km away, killed about 71,000 people, and cooled the entire planet the following year. It is one of only seven VEI-7 eruptions in our whole database — and the only one anyone alive today has records of.

The Explosion Heard 2,600 km Away

Tambora had been rumbling since 1812, so when it began throwing ash on 5 April 1815, the coastal garrisons of the Dutch East Indies were not entirely surprised. The detonations that night were loud enough that troops on Java, hundreds of kilometres away, marched out believing a ship was under attack. That was the overture. The main event came on the evening of 10 April, when three columns of fire merged and the whole mountain seemed to turn to liquid flame.

The climactic explosion was heard on Sumatra, about 2,600 km away — the acoustic equivalent of an explosion in Dublin being heard clearly in Moscow. Ash fell so thickly that Makassar, 380 km off, sat in total darkness for two days. Pyroclastic flows — the fast, ground-hugging avalanches of hot gas and rock we describe in our pyroclastic flow guide — swept down every flank and hit the sea, throwing up tsunamis that struck neighbouring islands. The Sumbawa language and its small kingdom, Tambora, were essentially erased in a single night.

By the Numbers: What VEI 7 Actually Means

“Largest in recorded history” is a phrase that gets thrown around. Here is what it means in measured quantities. Tambora ejected an estimated 150 km³ of ash, pumice and rock — equivalent to roughly 41 km³ of dense magma(Oppenheimer, 2003). For scale, the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens put out about 1 km³. Tambora was on the order of 150 times larger.

71,000 Dead: How Tambora Actually Killed

The eruption itself killed a minority of its victims. Around 11,000–12,000 people died directly — incinerated by pyroclastic flows, drowned by tsunamis, or crushed by ash-loaded roofs. The far larger toll came in the weeks and months after.

The slow catastrophe

Ash smothered farmland across Sumbawa and Lombok. Rice crops failed, livestock died, and water sources turned to grey slurry. An estimated 49,000 to 80,000 people then died of starvation and disease — the bulk of the toll. The most-cited total is ~71,000 (Oppenheimer, 2003), though some estimates run past 90,000. Either way, it is the deadliest eruption in recorded history.

This pattern — a small direct death toll dwarfed by a much larger secondary one from famine and disease — is the signature of the very biggest eruptions, and it is exactly what makes them a global rather than a local event. Tambora didn't stop killing at the shoreline. It kept killing for a year, on the other side of the world.

The Year Without a Summer

The 43-km column injected an enormous mass of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, where it formed a fine sulfate-aerosol veil that spread worldwide and reflected sunlight back to space. Global average temperatures fell by roughly 0.4–0.7 °C — small as a number, catastrophic as a growing-season disruption.

1816 became “the Year Without a Summer.” New England had snow and killing frosts in June and July. Europe recorded its coldest summer between 1766 and 2000. Harvests failed from Ireland to China; food prices spiked; there were riots and the last large subsistence crises in the Western world. A cholera outbreak in Bengal that year is often linked to the disrupted monsoon and is considered a starting point of the first global cholera pandemic. And in a rented villa on a cold, storm-locked Lake Geneva, an eighteen-year-old Mary Shelley — stuck indoors with Byron — wrote Frankenstein. Why sulfur, not ash, cools the planet

Ash falls out of the sky within days. It is the sulfur — converted to sulfate aerosols that linger in the stratosphere for a year or more — that does the climate damage. This is why VEI alone doesn't predict cooling: a sulfur-rich eruption punches far above its size. It's the same mechanism behind every volcanic winter in the record.

Where Tambora Ranks: The Only Seven VEI-7 Eruptions in Our Database

Across all 11,079 eruption records in our database, only seven reach VEI 7 — and none reach VEI 8. Tambora is the most recent of the seven, and the only one that happened within written, dated, eyewitnessed history. Every other member of this club is prehistoric, reconstructed from ash layers and ice cores.

Two things jump out of that list. First, Indonesia appears twice — the Samalas (Rinjani) eruption of 1257, on Lombok right next door to Sumbawa, was also a VEI 7 and left its own cold signature in medieval European chronicles. The Sunda arc is the most productive large-eruption factory on the planet. Second, note what “largest in recorded history” carefully does notsay: Tambora is not the largest eruption in the database's geological record. Tambora's Eruption Record

A volcano that produces a VEI 7 tends to go quiet for a long time afterward — it has, in a real sense, spent itself. Our GVP profile bears that out: after 1815, Tambora managed only three small eruptions, and its last confirmed activity was a modest event in 1967.

A note on dating: our data records the cataclysm under a start year of 1812 — the GVP convention of dating an eruption to when precursory activity began — while the climactic explosion came on 10–11 April 1815. Both dates are correct; they refer to different moments in the same event.

Could It Happen Again?

Yes — VEI 7 eruptions occur roughly once or twice per thousand years, so on any human timescale another one is not a question of if but when and where. The uncomfortable part is that we would likely get warning of only a few weeks, and no plan exists anywhere to feed a hemisphere through a second Year Without a Summer with today's far larger population and just-in-time food system.

The usual candidates named for a future large eruption include Campi Flegrei near Naples and Yellowstone — though, as we argue on those pages, both are routinely overstated, and Yellowstone is not “overdue.” A more honest reading of the record is that the next VEI 7 will probably come, as Tambora and Samalas did, from a subduction-zone stratovolcano nobody was especially worried about — quite possibly one of the hundred-plus in Indonesia alone.

Visiting Tambora Today

Tambora is now a national park, and the caldera is one of the great trekking objectives in Indonesia — a 6–7 km wide, kilometre-deep hole with a small crater lake at the bottom. The standard route from Pancasila village is a two-to-three-day round trip through rainforest and then savanna to the rim, usually timed to reach it at dawn. It is far less crowded than nearby Rinjani or Bromo, precisely because Sumbawa is harder to reach. Archaeologists have also excavated a “Pompeii of the East” on the flank — a village buried and preserved by the 1815 pyroclastic deposits.
