How Many Volcanoes Are in Kamchatka?

Our database catalogs 84 volcanoes on the Kamchatka Peninsula, 42 of them with a recorded eruption, divided between the Central and Eastern Kamchatka volcanic arcs. Counting older and extinct cones, the peninsula holds more than 300 volcanoes in all, of which about 29 are currently active. The whole landscape is protected as the "Volcanoes of Kamchatka" UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1996 — one of the most concentrated groups of active volcanoes anywhere on the planet.

The Ring of Fire's Northwestern Anchor

Kamchatka's volcanoes exist for one reason: subduction. The Pacific Plate plunges beneath the Okhotsk microplate along the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench, one of the deepest trenches on Earth, dragging water down with it. That water lowers the melting point of the mantle above, and the melt rises to build a wall of volcanoes down the peninsula. It is the northwestern anchor of the Pacific Ring of Fire — and it mirrors the Aleutian–Alaska arc directly across the Bering Sea, the two forming a continuous horseshoe of fire around the northern Pacific.

Because the subduction here is fast and steep, Kamchatka's volcanoes erupt often and, in Sheveluch's case, with unusual violence. Most are andesitic stratovolcanoes, the explosive kind, though Tolbachik shows the peninsula can also produce fluid basaltic shield-style eruptions.

Sheveluch: The Most Explosive Volcano in Our Database

Klyuchevskoy is the giant, but Sheveluch (also spelled Shiveluch) is the record-breaker. Across our 11,079-eruption dataset, no volcano has more large explosive eruptions: 43 of Sheveluch's eruptions are rated VEI 4 or higher, of which 17 reach VEI 5. Sheveluch grows and destroys lava domes in cycles, and a dome collapse can unleash a pyroclastic flow with little warning — which is exactly why it is monitored so intensively.

Klyuchevskoy and the "Home Volcanoes"

Klyuchevskoy is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia at 4,754 m and has been almost continuously active since its first recorded eruption in 1697 — a near-perfect basaltic-andesite cone that regularly fountains lava from its summit and flanks. To the south, two volcanoes stand watch over the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky: Avachinsky and Koryaksky, known locally as the "home volcanoes." And Bezymianny earned a permanent place in geology: its great directed-blast eruption in the mid-1950s became the model scientists later used to understand the lateral blast at Mount St. Helens in 1980.
