Merapi or Marapi? (they're different volcanoes)
Two active Indonesian volcanoes with almost the same name, about 1,600 km apart. Mount Merapi (this page) is on Central Javanear Yogyakarta, 2,910 m, Indonesia's most active volcano — its 2010 eruption killed 386. Mount Marapi is in West Sumatra, 2,885 m — its December 2023 eruption killed 23 hikers caught on the summit. Merapi's Current Status (September 2026)
Merapi is erupting right now — but in the slow, grinding way it usually does. A lava dome on the upper southwest flank keeps growing and collapsing, and during September 3–9, 2026, Indonesia's volcanology agency (PVMBG) recorded as many as nine lava avalanches per day running up to 2 km down the Sat/Putih drainage. It is worth being precise here, because Merapi's status gets sensationalized. Continuous dome growth with daily avalanches is Merapi's baseline, not a countdown to another 2010. The danger is real and local — anyone inside the exclusion zone is at risk from a dome collapse at any moment — but nothing in the current bulletins signals a large explosive eruption.

Where Is Merapi — and Why the Location Is the Real Problem
Merapi rises 2,910 meters on the border of Central Java and the Yogyakarta Special Region, in one of the most densely populated volcanic landscapes on the planet. Its fertile ash-fed slopes are farmed almost to the summit, hundreds of thousands of people live within a few kilometers of the danger zone, and the city of Yogyakarta — home to more than 400,000 — sits roughly 30 km to the south. That is the crux of Merapi's hazard: it is not just an energetic volcano, it is an energetic volcano with an enormous population pressed right up against it. 10,000 Years of Eruptions: Merapi's Fingerprint
Merapi has the longest and broadest eruption record of any volcano in our Indonesia data set. Our Smithsonian GVP record (id 420) lists 112 eruptions, the oldest dating to 8780 BCE. Of the 81 that are size-rated, the spread is telling: 24 are VEI-1, 32 are VEI-2, 21 are VEI-3, and 4 are VEI-4.
That range is exactly why Merapi is deadlier than its constantly-erupting neighbor Semeru, whose record is 91% VEI-2 — small events over and over. Merapi still has the small ones, but it also produces genuine VEI-3 and VEI-4 explosions that generate the pyroclastic flows that do the killing. A volcano that only ever erupts small is predictable; a volcano that mostly erupts small but occasionally erupts big is the one that catches people out.

The 2010 Catastrophe
Between October 26 and November 29, 2010, Merapi produced its largest eruption since 1872. It reached VEI-4, hurled ash as high as 14.5 km, and unleashed repeated pyroclastic flows that swept down the southern flanks — the same slopes carpeted with villages and farms. The 2010 event was worse than the modern norm partly because it started explosively rather than with slow dome growth, giving people far less warning. It reset expectations for what Merapi can do — and it is why Indonesian authorities now watch its dome and seismicity so closely, and evacuate early.
Why "Fire Mountain" Kills: Pyroclastic Flows
Merapi's killer is not lava — you can outwalk lava. It is the pyroclastic flow, which locals call wedhus gembel("shaggy goat," for the way the ash cloud rolls). When Merapi's summit dome collapses, it sends an avalanche of gas, ash, and rock at hundreds of kilometers per hour and several hundred degrees Celsius down the flanks. There is no outrunning it, which is why the exclusion zones and early evacuations exist. Combine that hazard with Merapi's wide eruption range and its crowded slopes, and you get one of the volcanoes at the very top of any most-dangerous-volcanoes list.
