Sinabung's 2026 Eruption: What's Happening

On the morning of August 31, 2026, Mount Sinabung erupted for the first time in about five years, sending a dense column of volcanic ash roughly 3,500 meters above the summit over the Karo Plateau of North Sumatra. Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) responded by raising the volcano's status by one step to Level III — Siaga, or "Standby" — the second-highest rung on the country's four-level scale.

The activity continued into early September. On September 5, observers logged thinner white-to-gray ash rising 300–500 meters above the crater. Indonesia's disaster agency (BNPB) began directing people in ash-affected villages — Ndokum Siroga and Kuta Tengah in Simpang Empat sub-district, and Payung — toward safer ground, and distributing face masks. As of September 4, a total of 208 families (about 650 people) had evacuated, with 405 sheltering at the Jambur Arih Ersada center in Sukatepu Village. The 1,200-Year Sleep — and Why "400 Years" Is Wrong

Nearly every news story about Sinabung repeats that it "woke after 400 years of dormancy." That figure is too small. Our Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program record for Sinabung shows its last confirmed eruption before modern times was a pyroclastic flow down the southeast flank, radiocarbon-dated to 740–880 CE — about 1,200 years ago. An unconfirmed eruption was noted in 1881, and gas venting was seen at the summit in 1912, but neither is a confirmed magmatic eruption. In other words, when Sinabung exploded in August 2010, it was ending roughly twelve centuries of silence, not four.

That distinction matters. A volcano that has been quiet for over a millennium looks, to the communities living on its fertile flanks, like a mountain — not a hazard. Sinabung had no monitoring network and no eruption in living memory. When it reawakened, hazard maps and exclusion zones had to be built almost from scratch, in real time, around a volcano nobody expected. That is a large part of why the death toll climbed over the following decade.

The Deadly Decade: 2010–2021

The 2010 reawakening was only the beginning. After a brief pause, Sinabung roared back in September 2013 and then barely stopped for years. It grew a summit lava dome that repeatedly collapsed, and each collapse fed pyroclastic flows — avalanches of ~700°C gas and rock that race downhill faster than anyone can run. This is what makes Sinabung dangerous. It does not threaten towns with slow lava flows; it kills with sudden, superheated surges.

The February 1, 2014 eruption killed 16 people who had gone back inside the danger zone. On May 22, 2016, a pyroclastic flow overran farmers tending fields in an evacuated village, killing seven and critically burning three more. Evacuations mounted through the period — more than 3,700 in September 2013, around 5,000 that November, at least 10,000 by mid-2015 — and several villages were abandoned for good, their residents resettled. The activity finally wound down with a last cluster of explosions in 2020 and 2021, including a March 2, 2021 blast that pushed ash roughly 5 km into the sky. Then Sinabung went quiet again — until August 2026.
