Pulling the histories of all seven from our Smithsonian GVP database gives 241recorded eruptions between them — and no two of the seven behave alike. If a single deep process were driving them, you'd expect some family resemblance. There is none.
Look at the fingerprints. Semeru is a small-eruption metronome — 59 of its 66 recorded eruptions are VEI 2, the same modest size over and over. Anak Krakatau carries 58 eruptions dominated by VEI 1–2 — plus the single VEI-6 that annihilated the original island in 1883. Sinabung is the opposite temperament: just six confirmed eruptions in its entire record, but two of them VEI 4, after sleeping roughly 1,200 years. Ili Lewotolok logged 1,873 separate little explosions in five days. Ibubarely appears in the old record at all yet erupts almost daily now. These are not variations on a theme.
