La Garita: The Biggest Eruption in North American History
La Garita sits in the San Juan Mountains near Creede, and it wasn’t a one-off. The San Juan Volcanic Field hosted at least 15 major caldera-forming eruptions between about 35 and 23 million years ago — an Oligocene volcanic engine that ranks among the largest such fields in North America. La Garita was simply the biggest bang in a long sequence. Why Does Colorado Have Volcanoes at All?
Colorado isn’t near a plate boundary today, so its volcanism needs a different explanation. Most of it dates to the Oligocene, when the subducting Farallon Plate off the West Coast finally peeled away from the base of the continent. As it did, hot mantle welled up beneath the Rockies and triggered a continent-wide flare-up of volcanism — the "ignimbrite flare-up" — that fed the San Juan calderas. Later, crustal stretching along the Rio Grande Rift produced the younger basalts, including Dotsero and the Spanish Peaks intrusions. In short: Colorado’s volcanoes are the aftermath of tectonic events that have since moved on.
