Semeru's 2026 Eruption: What's Happening Now

Mount Semeru has been erupting on and off all year, and September 2026 has been busy even by its standards. On September 6, an eruption at 7:51 a.m. local time sent an ash column about 1,000 meters above the summit. A week later, on September 13, a smaller event pushed ash roughly 200 meters up. None of this is out of character. What makes the 2026 sequence notable is the sheer count: through mid-September, PVMBG had tallied 1,804 separate eruptive events at Semeru — the highest of any Indonesian volcano this year. Authorities closed the mountain's hiking trails, and forest fires on the flanks added a second hazard for crews on the ground.

Where Is Mount Semeru?

Semeru anchors the southern end of Bromo–Tengger–Semeru National Park in East Java, about three hours' drive southeast of Malang. At 3,657 meters it is the roof of Java — taller than the far more famous Bromo caldera that shares its park. Its active vent, Jonggring Saloko, sits just below the summit crater Mahameru and points ash and blocks toward the southeast, which is why the Besuk Kobokan valley on that flank is the danger channel every hazard map fixates on. Semeru's Eruption Fingerprint: Small, but Relentless

Here is the thing most write-ups miss. Semeru is not a "big bang" volcano. Of the 65 size-rated eruptions in our Smithsonian GVP record for the volcano (id 428), 59 — about 91% — are graded VEI-2. Only one is smaller and only five are larger. It erupts small, and it does so almost without pause; that is what earns Semeru a place among the most persistently active volcanoes on Earth.

The handful of VEI-4 entries in the record are a bit of a trick of the catalogue. They mark Semeru's long multi-year runs (2014–2017, 2017–2018, and the 2019-to-present episode) — catalogued at VEI-4 because they bundle years of continuous small output into one entry, not because Semeru ever produced a single VEI-4 blast. Compare that to its neighbor Merapi, whose record spreads across VEI-1 through VEI-4 with real VEI-3 and VEI-4 explosions — the reason Merapi's 2010 eruption killed hundreds while Semeru's constant grumbling usually does not. The Deadly December 2021 Eruption — Why Lahars Are the Real Hazard

If Semeru usually erupts small, why is it dangerous? Because the killer here is rarely the ash. On December 4, 2021, days of heavy monsoon rain helped collapse a slug of fresh lava at the summit. The dome collapse sent an ash plume 15 km into the sky and pyroclastic flows up to 4 km down the mountain — but the deadliest agent was water. Rain remobilized the fresh deposits into lahars — fast, concrete-like volcanic mudflows — that ran more than 13 km along the Besuk Kobokan valley, burying homes and a key bridge.
