About Otdelniy

Otdelniy is a pyroclastic cone(s) rising to 814 meters (2,671 feet) in Russia's Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Otdelniy is located in Russia, within the Kuril Volcanic Arc of the broader Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 52.22° N, 157.44° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. With a summit elevation of 814 meters above sea level, Otdelniy is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a shield, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

The Otdelniy shield volcano, considered early Holocene by Masurenkov (1980), lies east of the Savan River, across from the Pleistocene Savan volcano. It, along with adjacent shield volcanoes and a large group of late-Pleistocene to Holocene basaltic pyroclastic cones, is about halfway between Khodutka and Opala volcanoes. Three groups of late-Pleistocene to Holocene pyroclastic cones and associated lava fields are also located along a roughly 20-km-wide area between the Opala and Savan rivers, SE, S, and SW of Opala. This was not included by Ponomareva et al. (2007) in their review of Holocene volcanoes in Kamchatka.
