About Golaya

Golaya is a stratovolcano rising to 858 meters (2,815 feet) in Russia's Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Golaya is located in Russia, within the Kuril Volcanic Arc of the broader Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 52.26° N, 157.79° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. With a summit elevation of 858 meters above sea level, Golaya is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a composite, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

Golaya is a small basaltic stratovolcano of Pleistocene-to-Holocene age (Masurenkov, 1980) south of Asacha volcano. It is elongated in a N-S direction and overlooks small shield volcanoes and cinder cones related to regional basaltic volcanism near the headwaters of the Asacha River. This was not included by Ponomareva et al. (2007) in their review of Holocene volcanoes in Kamchatka.
