About Amboy
Amboy is a pyroclastic cone rising to 288 meters (945 feet) in United States's North America Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.
Geography & Climate
Amboy is located in United States, within the Basin and Range Volcanic Province of the broader North America Volcanic Regions. Situated at 34.55° N, 115.78° W in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a subtropical climate zone. At just 288 meters above sea level, Amboy is a relatively low-elevation volcanic feature. Despite its modest height, it remains an active geological formation with the same underlying magmatic processes as its taller counterparts. The volcanic landform is characterized as a minor, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.
GVP Reference Summary
The 70-sq-km Amboy basaltic lava field was erupted onto a flat-lying alluvial valley from Amboy Crater, a prominent cinder cone with four nested craters that rises 75 m above adjacent lava flows at the NE end of the lava field. The dominantly pahoehoe lava field divided the Bristol Dry Lake, occupying a depression between the Bristol and Bullion Mountains, into two playas. The cone and flow were originally considered to be early Holocene in age, but more recent surface exposure dating (Phillips, 2003) has given a 79,000 +/- 5000 yr BP age.
