About Tri Sestry

Tri Sestry is a stratovolcano rising to 998 meters (3,274 feet) in Russia's Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Tri Sestry is located in Russia, within the Kuril Volcanic Arc of the broader Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 45.93° N, 149.92° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. With a summit elevation of 998 meters above sea level, Tri Sestry is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a composite, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

The Tri Sestry ("Three Sisters") volcanic complex is located in the center of Urup Island, in the south-central Kuril Islands. Erosion of this andesitic massif has cut deep ravines on the flanks and produced multiple peaks around a river valley open to the NNE. The southern range of those peaks is known as Petr Shmidt Ridge. A summit lava dome was considered by Gorshkov (1970) to have been active during either the late Pleistocene or early Holocene; hot springs were reported along the coast to the NW. No later research is known that describes or dates eruption deposits.
