About Arayat
Arayat is a stratovolcano rising to 1,026 meters (3,366 feet) in Philippines's Western Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.
Geography & Climate
Arayat is located in Philippines, within the Luzon Volcanic Arc of the broader Western Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 15.20° N, 120.74° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a tropical climate zone. With a summit elevation of 1,026 meters above sea level, Arayat is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a composite, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.
GVP Reference Summary
The forested Arayat volcano is one of the few topographic features that rise above the flat Central Plain of Luzon Island, NE of the city of Angeles. A large breached crater on the WNW side is the apparent source of a major debris-avalanche deposit that forms hummocky terrain beyond the W and NW flanks. The volcano has been listed as active during the past 2,000 years (IAVCEI, 1973), perhaps referring to its thermal activity; weak steaming occurs at the NW side of the summit. The only dated rocks are 530,000 and 650,000 year old basalts that predated the collapse and formation of an andesitic dome known as White Rock in the collapse amphitheater. No eruptions have been recorded or observed.
