About Girekol

Girekol is a shield rising to 2,145 meters (7,038 feet) in Turkiye's Arabia-Central Asia Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Girekol is located in Turkiye, within the Central Anatolian Volcanic Province of the broader Arabia-Central Asia Volcanic Regions. Situated at 39.10° N, 43.43° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. At 2,145 meters above sea level, Girekol rises above the surrounding terrain into montane or subalpine conditions. The elevation creates distinct ecological zones along its flanks, from forested lower slopes to exposed rocky terrain near the summit. The volcanic landform is characterized as a shield, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

Girekol Tepe, a Pleistocene-to-Holocene, calc-alkaline to alkaline shield volcano, is located directly north of the NE arm of Lake Van and NE of the city of Ercis in eastern Anatolia (Yilmaz, 1990). Work by Lebedev at al. (2009) found no volcanic products younger than 0.36 +/- 0.06 Ma associated with Girekol.
