About Lower Chindwin

Lower Chindwin is a volcanic field rising to 385 meters (1,263 feet) in Burma (Myanmar)'s Eastern Asia Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Lower Chindwin is located in Burma (Myanmar), within the Southeast Asia Volcanic Province of the broader Eastern Asia Volcanic Regions. Situated at 22.28° N, 95.10° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a tropical climate zone. At just 385 meters above sea level, Lower Chindwin is a relatively low-elevation volcanic feature. Despite its modest height, it remains an active geological formation with the same underlying magmatic processes as its taller counterparts. The volcanic landform is characterized as a cluster, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

The Lower Chindwin area contains seven or eight late-Pliocene and Pleistocene explosion craters. A lake-filled crater located at Songyuang is surrounded by olivine basaltic lava flows and pyroclastic material. This region along the lower Chindwin River also contains rhyolitic, dacitic, and andesitic rocks. Although some workers have made statements about the presence of Holocene or "sub-Recent" basalts, there is no clear morphological or dating evidence of such activity.
