About Four Craters Lava Field

Four Craters Lava Field is a volcanic field rising to 1,501 meters (4,925 feet) in United States's North America Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Four Craters Lava Field is located in United States, within the High Lava Plains Volcanic Province of the broader North America Volcanic Regions. Situated at 43.36° N, 120.67° W in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. With a summit elevation of 1,501 meters above sea level, Four Craters Lava Field is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a cluster, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

The Four Craters Lava Field is the SE-most of a group of three basaltic lava fields SE of Newberry volcano in the High Lava Plains of central Oregon. The lava field originated from four pyroclastic cones that were constructed along a roughly 4-km-long NW-SE-trending line. The NW-most and highest cone has a well-preserved crater rim. The other cones are breached to the W, SW, and S, respectively. Multiple surface exposure dates place the emplacement of the field at about 13 ka (Mackey et al., 2012).
