Geography & Climate
Khanuy Gol Volcanic Field is located in Mongolia, within the Baikal Rift Volcanic Province of the broader Eastern Asia Volcanic Regions. Situated at 48.67° N, 102.75° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. With a summit elevation of 1,886 meters above sea level, Khanuy Gol Volcanic Field is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a cluster, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.
GVP Reference Summary
The Khanuy Gol (also spelled Hanui or Hanuy Gol) Volcanic Field is also known as the Chanuj Gol or Bulgan volcanic field. It consists of a group of 10 olivine-basaltic lava and cinder cones in west-central Mongolia about 150 km WNW of the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. The field covers a 3,500 km2 plain along the Khanuy River and in drainages to the east. Basalts along the Orkhan Gol (Orkhan River) to the east were dated at 6.4 to 1.5 million years (Whitford-Stark, 1987). The Togo (or Togoo) group of cones, ~50 km E of Khanuy and N of the settlement of Bulgan, are rich in ilmenite megacrysts and altered peridotite xenoliths; two main cones are ~7 km apart N-S. The volcanic field was considered by IAVCEI (1973) to be late Pleistocene to Holocene, though no precise age dates are available. Ivanov et al. (2015) mapped the volcanic features in this area NE of the Taryat volcanic field as Pliocene and/or Quaternary, but not Holocene.
