About Srednii

Srednii is a stratovolcano rising to 36 meters (118 feet) in Russia's Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity. The volcano has produced 1 recorded eruption.

Geography & Climate

Srednii is located in Russia, within the Kuril Volcanic Arc of the broader Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 47.59° N, 152.89° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. At just 36 meters above sea level, Srednii is a relatively low-elevation volcanic feature. Despite its modest height, it remains an active geological formation with the same underlying magmatic processes as its taller counterparts. The volcanic landform is characterized as a composite, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

Geological Context

Srednii sits in a subduction zone, where one tectonic plate dives beneath another, creating intense heat and pressure that generates magma. Subduction zones are responsible for many of the world's most explosive volcanoes and deadliest eruptions. For communities in Russia near Srednii, this tectonic setting means the volcano is capable of producing powerful explosive eruptions, pyroclastic flows, and lahars that can threaten populated areas within tens of kilometers of the summit. The dominant rock type is no data (checked), which influences the viscosity of the magma and, consequently, the style of eruptions this volcano produces. Rock chemistry is one of the most important factors in determining whether a volcano erupts explosively or effusively.

Eruption History Summary

Srednii has 1 recorded eruption in the geological database, spanning from 1880 CE to 1880 CE.

GVP Reference Summary

Remnants of the Srednii submarine volcano form a hazardous obstruction in the strait between Rasshua and Ushishur Islands. Flat-topped Khitraya Rock may be a young (Holocene) extrusion dome, and adjoining rocks may be the rim of an old caldera (Gorshkov, 1970). Sapper (1917), Neumann Van Padang (1938), and Gushchenko (1979) reported a submarine eruption between Rasshua and Ushishur Islands on 12 July, possibly in 1880 (the year is uncertain).

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Srednii

Is Srednii an active volcano?+

Srednii is classified as active based on credible evidence of past eruptions. Although its last known eruption was in prehistoric times, volcanologists consider it capable of erupting again.

When did Srednii last erupt?+

The most recent recorded eruption of Srednii occurred in 1880 CE with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 0. The eruption was classified as a "Uncertain Eruption." Srednii has 1 recorded eruption in total.

How high is Srednii?+

Srednii has a summit elevation of 36 meters (118 feet) above sea level. At 36 meters, it is a relatively low-elevation volcano.

What type of volcano is Srednii?+

Srednii is classified as a Stratovolcano. Stratovolcanoes (also called composite volcanoes) are steep, conical volcanoes built up by many layers of hardened lava, tephra, and volcanic ash. They are among the most common and dangerous types, known for explosive eruptions.

Where is Srednii located?+

Srednii is located in Russia, in the Northwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. More specifically, it lies within the Kuril Volcanic Arc. Its exact coordinates are 47.586° latitude, 152.893° longitude.

Is it safe to visit Srednii?+

Srednii can generally be visited, but as with any volcano, visitors should check local conditions and any advisory notices before traveling. Russia may have specific regulations for accessing volcanic areas. Guided tours are often the safest and most informative way to experience a volcano.
