About Oki-Dogo

Oki-Dogo is a shield rising to 151 meters (495 feet) in Japan's Western Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Oki-Dogo is located in Japan, within the Nankai Volcanic Arc of the broader Western Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 36.18° N, 133.33° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a temperate climate zone. At just 151 meters above sea level, Oki-Dogo is a relatively low-elevation volcanic feature. Despite its modest height, it remains an active geological formation with the same underlying magmatic processes as its taller counterparts.

GVP Reference Summary

Dogo, one of the Oki islands, is located north of the SW Honshu city of Matsue off the west coast of Japan. Some of the alkaline basalts on the island contain abundant mantle xenoliths. No unambiguous volcanic features are visible, though Tomita (1969) described a shield volcano and cinder cone. Reportedly the Daimanji-san lava flow overlies alluvial gravel containing an ancient water-jar, and the name Takuhi-yama ("Burning Mountain") may record a tradition of an eruption. The Misaki Basalt Group of lava flows form a small flat peninsula on the SW side of the island where the airport is located. Uto et al. (1994) identified the Misaki basalts as the youngest on the island, with a K-Ar date of about 550,000 years.
