About Malang Plain

Malang Plain is a maar(s) rising to 662 meters (2,172 feet) in Indonesia's Sunda-Banda Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Malang Plain is located in Indonesia, within the Sunda Volcanic Arc of the broader Sunda-Banda Volcanic Regions. Situated at 8.07° S, 112.73° E in the Southern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a tropical climate zone. With a summit elevation of 662 meters above sea level, Malang Plain is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a cluster, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

A group of nine "small eruption" centers were mapped by van Bemelen (1937) as "subrecent or recent" within an area almost 40 km N-S on the Malang alluvial plain, west of Semeru and the Tengger Caldera. Some of these may be related to Tengger activity, but others have no clear connection to any specific eruption center and are situated on a distinct N-S zone of tectonic weakness. No other studies are known, and van Bemmelen (1937) provided no further descriptions that would indicate Holocene activity. Two of the locations appear to be eroded cones with craters, while others are small hills with no distinguishing volcanic features.
