About Rajabasa
Rajabasa is a stratovolcano rising to 1,282 meters (4,206 feet) in Indonesia's Sunda-Banda Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.
Geography & Climate
Rajabasa is located in Indonesia, within the Sunda Volcanic Arc of the broader Sunda-Banda Volcanic Regions. Situated at 5.78° S, 105.63° E in the Southern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a tropical climate zone. With a summit elevation of 1,282 meters above sea level, Rajabasa is a moderately sized peak that remains accessible to hikers and researchers for much of the year. The volcanic landform is characterized as a composite, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.
GVP Reference Summary
Rajabasa is a prominent isolated volcano along the Sunda Strait at the SE-most tip of Sumatra. The eroded edifice is ~7.5 km diameter overall, with the Balerang summit towards the SE and the slightly higher Rajabasa to the NW with a crater ~600 m in diameter. Fumarolic activity occurs on the foot and flanks of the edifice; increased activity was reported in April 1863 and May 1892. Bronto et al. (2012) described Quaternary lavas (andesite-basalt), breccias, and tuff. Hasibuan et al. (2020) reported that the youngest eruptive material, an andesite from the Rajabasa cone, was K-Ar dated at 0.120 +/- 0.04 Ma.
