About Mundua

Mundua is a complex rising to 171 meters (561 feet) in Papua New Guinea's Southwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Mundua is located in Papua New Guinea, within the Bismarck Sea Volcanic Province of the broader Southwestern Pacific Volcanic Regions. Situated at 4.62° S, 149.34° E in the Southern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a tropical climate zone. At just 171 meters above sea level, Mundua is a relatively low-elevation volcanic feature. Despite its modest height, it remains an active geological formation with the same underlying magmatic processes as its taller counterparts. The volcanic landform is characterized as a composite, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

A cluster of basaltic volcanoes forms the Mundua island group in the Witu Islands of Papua New Guinea. The largest volcanic center is formed by the W tip of the 7-km-wide, linear Mundua Island and the arcuate Wingoru Island immediately to the W. The crater of this volcano is flooded by the sea through narrow channels on the N and S sides; remnants of crater walls form Wingoru island and are exposed at the W tip of Mundua island. Five small cones occupy the central and eastern sides of Mundua, two of these have well-preserved craters Johnson and Blake (1972). No eruptions have been recorded or dated.
