About Overo, Cerro

Overo, Cerro is a maar rising to 4,576 meters (15,014 feet) in Chile's South America Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.

Geography & Climate

Overo, Cerro is located in Chile, within the Central Andean Volcanic Arc of the broader South America Volcanic Regions. Situated at 23.52° S, 67.66° W in the Southern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a subtropical climate zone. Standing at 4,576 meters above sea level, Overo, Cerro towers above the alpine zone, where vegetation gives way to bare rock, snow, and ice for much of the year. The high elevation means the upper slopes experience significantly colder temperatures than surrounding lowlands. The volcanic landform is characterized as a minor, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.

GVP Reference Summary

Cerro Overo is located on the lower NE flank of Chiliques volcano, west of the Salar de Aguas Calientes. The 600-m-wide, 50-m-deep maar crater was determined to have a maximum eruption age of 77 ± 7.8 ka based on U-Th/He in zircon from entrained felsic xenoliths (cited in van Alderwerelt, 2017). The 55-m-high La Albóndiga Grande lava dome, about 2 km SW from Cerro Overo, has a similar composition and was considered by van Alderwerelt (2017) to be of similar age from the same magma source. Both erupted through the Atana ignimbrite.
