About Tepi
Tepi is a shield rising to 2,728 meters (8,951 feet) in Ethiopia's Eastern Africa Volcanic Regions. No historical eruptions have been recorded, though the volcano is classified based on geological evidence of past activity.
Geography & Climate
Tepi is located in Ethiopia, within the Western Ethiopia Plateau Volcanic Province of the broader Eastern Africa Volcanic Regions. Situated at 7.42° N, 35.43° E in the Northern Hemisphere, the volcano lies within a tropical climate zone. At 2,728 meters above sea level, Tepi rises above the surrounding terrain into montane or subalpine conditions. The elevation creates distinct ecological zones along its flanks, from forested lower slopes to exposed rocky terrain near the summit. The volcanic landform is characterized as a shield, which describes the physical shape and structure of the volcanic edifice as observed from the surface.
GVP Reference Summary
The densely forested Tepi basaltic shield volcano is at the northern end of the Turkana rift, ~300 km W of the center of the main Ethiopian rift, and was constructed along a zone of ENE-trending faults that extend in line with the Gulf of Aden. It is capped by prominent cinder cones and small craters, and there are associated hot springs. Three satellitic centers are located along an E-W line north of the main shield. Lava flows have traveled down pre-existing valleys. Davidson (1983) considered it to be of probable Holocene age, but no eruption dates are known.
